Platte County Fair 2006

County Fair got started on August 1st with Charlie's pigs Frances and Gunther (remember Car 54 Where are You?) weighing in at 279 and 256. The cut off for weight was 285 so Frances made it by only 6 pounds!!! All summer we had been concerned with these pigs gaining because that were gaining the best any of our pigs have ever gained (over 2 pounds per day) what a bunch of pigs, huh? Smile.... we had no way of controling the feed from Wheatland. Dan and Charlie mixed their feed with oats that last two weeks to slow them down. That and a lot of prayer must have done the trick! They made it and Frances sold for $3.85 per pound and Charlie found a generous buyer at the sale for his second pig at a $1.00 per pound. We felt blessed, not to mention relieved. Charlie and Dan had purchased the pigs just 6 days before the fire. Who would have guessed what we were in for?

Charlie also did two really nice woodworking projects. He and Dan made me a cute bedside table last fall and it took a blue state fair ribbon. He had also designed and made me a table for my Christmas Dickens Village pieces (now lost in the fire) in woodshop out of oak that is lovely. The judge was impressed by the fact that Charlie designed it himself (it has an unusual shape to show off the Village pieces). It was also put together solely with wood glue. No nails or screws at all. He got a purple on that. Char also did a photography project that I posted the pictures from DC in the last blog entry. I am happy to report he took a purple on that too. It went to State Fair and we will have to see how he will do at that level.

We have to report that doing Fair from Wheatland is much easier than from Chugwater. Gone were the years of 17 trips in one week from Chugwater to Wheatland.... an upside of the fire?!?!

What a bunch of hams!
