Charlie at Cougar StaduimToday Charlie paid his $200 deposit for Washington State University (WSU)and is now an offical Cougar!!! He and I visited the beautiful Division 1 school last weekend in Pullman and he loved it! There are about 18,000 students at the university and about 10,000 in the town itself. So while the town is hopping with college aged students, it is closer to a Wyoming town than many places would have been.
Pullman is set in rich rolling wheat country which was carved out by glaciers years ago and is said to have 12 feet of top-soil. Eat your heart out Wyoming farmers! Pullman is 1 hours from Spokane on the eastern side of WA. Their speedlimit is 60 all the way from Spokane to Pullman (about 75 miles) and people actually drive 60. This is not Colorado, Dorothy!
Dan wanted Char to count the cost of going so far from home so we had that conversation about it tonight at dinner. We warned Charlie that when he opts to go so far he takes the chance that our visits will be limited like with his sibs... although we will be empty nesters so who knows.
The highlight of our visit was our time with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship Staff worker, Alex Moore and three students at a very wonderful breakfast spot called "The Old European". The three students really gave us the inside scoop on housing, their best academic, social and spirtual tips. One of them had a roomate named Joey (who was quite a character) who is a broadcasting major. Joey ended up taking us on a tour, in his bathrobe and sport coat--- no really--- of the Communications Department. Char got to see the TV, Cable 8 and radio studios and the newspaper room. They publish the Daily Evergreen is a 7 days a week paper. Char got to meet some of the key people involved and they welcomed his help next year. Their Department is the 3rd best in the country so Charlie thought it was very cool!!!! Joey's tour tipped the scale in my opinion.
Check out Joey and see for yourself...
So the parents are wondering how we managed to run off all five of our kids to schools so far away... actually I can picture Charlie there fairly easily. He will love the pass that he can buy to get him in all the sporting events. He will love the intramural sports and having Cougar calves (everyone walks everywhere... great on many levels, huh?) He already has five really nice friends and IV will take him under their wing. God provides in some amazing ways, huh?! Imagine... Charlie Westerman a COUG?!?!?
